What to do when someone dies

REGISTRAR'S OFFICE

All deaths must be registered. The Registrar will require details of the deceased.

Once the death has been registered, copy certificates can be purchased for a nominal fee (for insurance, banks, etc).

The Registrar will also give you:

  • A form for burial or cremation which your Funeral Director needs to carry out your wishes (GREEN FORM)
  • A form to send to the DSS to alter pension benefits or widow’s benefit or allowance and to claim assistance with funeral expenses if necessary.

In some circumstances where a Coroner is involved or where there is any other delay it is important you contact your Funeral Director immediately.

THE CORONER

In some cases the Coroner will have to investigate a death. This applies if the death is sudden, a murder, an accident, deaths in custody or there is no known cause of death.

If a Coroner is involved in investigating a death, there can be a delay while s/he carries out an investigation. This will affect when a date can be confirmed for a funeral. In circumstances where the Coroner is involved, do inform the Funeral Director who will be able to advise you accordingly

.

HOME ARRANGEMENTS

Sometimes, families are unable to attend the funeral home in order to make funeral arrangements for a number of reasons. This could be due to work commitments, disability, or fear of attending a funeral home.

We are able to offer arrangements in the home where the Funeral Consultant or Director will attend. This service will of course be dependent upon the availability of the staff and an appointment will need to be booked.

DWP CLAIMS

You may be able to get help with the cost of a funeral in the UK.

You are eligible for help with the cost if you are receiving at least one of the following benefits:

  • Disabled Person’s Tax credit

You will need to fill in form SF200 which can be obtained from your local DWP or from us. We are available, if necessary to help you complete the form.

COSTS

We appreciate and understand the financial implications the costs of a funeral can have on some families. Costs vary from area to area, from different funeral companies.

We therefore, offer a price guarantee scheme whereby we will match any written quote you receive elsewhere – a like for like service.
